A young boy was forced to serve out his father's, a revolutionary, life sentence in Santa Prisca. His only comfort was smuggled books and meditation. Over the years, he trained himself to peak mental and physical condition. Subjected to a military experiment, he survived exposure to an experimental steroid called Venom and escaped the prison. As Bane, he started a career as a freelance assassin. Believing Batman to be a dark figment of his imagination, Bane dedicated himself to killing him in order to achieve inner peace. Coincidentally, he was hired by the Black Mask, Joker in disguise, to kill Batman. Bane was defeated and taken to Blackgate Prison. Amanda Waller manipulated a prison break using Catwoman to free Bane but he was recaptured again.
While incarcerated at Arkham Asylum, Bane and all of the inmates were freed by the Joker. After dosing himself with Venom, Bane attacked law enforcement teams that responded. During the chaos, he tossed a police car occupied by Killer Frost. He then charged the bridge but Batman intervened and tossed explosive gel in his face. While Bane was dazed from the explosion, Batman yanked the cords connected to him and sent him plummeting into the Gotham Bay. Leaving him to the police, Batman went after the Joker.
