Ben is a hard headed but soft hearted man, he's known to be hard and mean on the outside but to have a heart of gold, he's very self conscious about his appearance and often refers to himself as a monster but he appreciates his powers and uses them to bring justice to criminals alongside the fantastic four. Though he mostly appears tough as nails he's known to be a nurturer as he shows this towards Reed and Sue's children.

Due to exposure to high amounts of cosmic radiation Ben Grimm's body has mutated to enormous rocky proportions. He is almost as strong as the hulks and is almost as invulnerable as them. He can also breath underwater for extended periods of time. The Thing cannot age. This allows him to theoretically never die. He is an exceptionally skilled pilot, and also an expert astronaut. He is uniquely gifted in the art of hand-to-hand combat.
