Blue first appeared in the Pokémon Generations episode The Challenger. At beginning of the episode, he was being discussed by the Elite Four as a very strong Trainer as they prepared for his arrival at the Indigo Plateau, having become the first Trainer in a long time to have collected eight Gym Badges. He was subsequently shown defeating the Elite Four with relative ease, claiming the title of Champion. Shortly after this, he was seen welcoming Red to come challenge him.
